About Me:

I'm a writer, a professor of English Literature, and a therapist, working with writers, especially memoirists to come to peace with their past.

I'm also on a spiritual pilgrimage.  Most of us here are, of course, but not all of us know it, and even fewer have any idea what's called for.

Just this year, 2008, I published my sixth book: Stories We Need to Know: Reading Your Life Path in Literature, (Findhorn Press) That title about says it all, but if you need me to explain, here goes. Literature has been used as a teaching tool, telling us how to live and grow spiritually, for as long as humans having been telling stories.  If you look at the last 3000 years of literature and myth in the West you'll see that there are six major archetypes of spiritual development.  Always six, always in the same order, from The Innocent to the fully-achieved Magician.

My seventh book, The Six Archetypes of Love, is due out this Fall, and it asks the next question.  This is, if we have all these archetypal stages we can choose to explore, then what is the ultimate goal of all this learning?  The answer is as fundamantal as it is  simple; we are here to learn about loving each other better.  For without that we cannot hope for much peace on this beleaguered planet, nor can we expect much real spiritual progress.  As we know, though, most people get love wrong.  We don't find fulfilling relationships easily (and some of us never find anything that comes close) while governments get love wrong in even more unhelpful ways - when they engage in wars.  Yet despite this even wars have a hbit of bring human compassion and tenderness forward in the midst of carnage. It seems as if love insists on breaking through, no matter how hard we try to deny ourselves its benefits.  Like grass growing in the cracks in between paving slabs, it seems unstoppable.

If you want to know how to get more real love in your life, and to nurture it, well - you'd best buy the book.  You can pre-order it through Amazon. It may just be that being loving is the most radically political thing any of us can do….
